SumWing

The SumWing is intended as an alternative to the beam trawl. A beam trawl consists of a beam which holds the net open and two shoes which keep the beam at a distance above the bottom so that bottom fish can be caught. In a SumWing, this beam is replaced by a wing. This wing is lighter and has less resistance. To minimise the force on the bottom, it is filled with water.

The SumWing represents economical fishing with regard to fuel savings. In addition, there can be talk of less bottom disturbance as there is less bottom pressure. To reduce bottom pressure even further, work is also underway to combine the SumWing with the pulse system.
